Whats the difference between Tremclad high gloss
black paint and mercury outdrive paint? I want to
paint the outdrive to spruce it up as i am putting new decals on it.The boat (20 foot Doral)
is used only in fresh water. Is it worth the extra money for (mercury outdrive paint)?

When I had a Mercruiser, I used the Rustolium like Bondo. That stuff is a lot tougher than the Merc enemal.

Tremclad is the Canadian Rustoleum. They've got the same parent and it's doubtful the paint formulations are any different too.
If you're trying to match colour exactly, I would swear Phantom Black has a bit of greenishness to it. But to me both paints seem the same otherwise: merc paint is no higher quality. (EDIT Don S posted while I was typing away, it would seem that quite the reverse is true. I don't doubt it at all.) They both seem to take forever to dry especially if you build up the coats quickly so I guess they're using the same base.
The main thing is to do the prep work - clean meticulously, scuff the old paint, and prep any bare parts. To prep a bare part, sand to shiny metal, etch with a 50/50 mix of vinegar and water, then prime with a zinc chromate or zinc phosphate primer.
I don't really know anything about outdrives, but that seems to work well for outboards. :)

Merc phantom black is Laquer. You can use it over the original coating but once you use any enamel, you can never use laquer again.
