Merc pees sometimes but does go into gear

Merc 500

1. The engine revs but does go into gear and it stops peeing, then it will click into gear for a second and start peeing againI changed the lower unit and it still does it?

2. The engine doesn't go fast at all lync/sync done carbs rebuilt and fuel pump. Compression is 120 in all 4, Could it still be somthing with the engine i.e reed valves pistons etc?

Is the motor overheating?

not that i know of the compression is still 120 plus in all cylinders

Take it to a shop to get the waterpump replaced. They will adjust the shift cable as part of that job anyway. Both problems solved.
