merc pre Alpha 1 leg shifting prblems

Hello I have a merc 165 with what I have been told a pre alpha 1 merc leg now the problem I seem to have is that when I ingage the binacle to forward I have move it a fair distance to in gage and when it does it clunks a few times before it ingages fully. I notice it also does this in reverse as well. Is there a way to ajust this so that for one the shifter throw is shorter on the binacle and will this remove the clunking before ingaging in . just to give you a idea how much I have to move the binacle 12 o clock in neutral and 10 o clock is foward and 2 o clock is reverse. thanks for all your input

Ayuh,... That almost sounds 'bout Right...
If there's any slop, it's probably in the lower shift cable...
It's tellin' ya it needs replacin'...
