Hi guys was reading just now about an old merc that had a pressure tank, i never heard of an old merc pressure tank?? I have a mark 28, a mark 28 A and 2 merc 200's as well as one i just found at the dump a mark 25 18hp. Do any of these need a pressure tank? I really haven't got to them yet still playing with other makes. It sure would be great to know,, thanks

Never heard of a Merc that used a pressure tank, but I have seen people call other makes Mercs.

Mercury used a pressure system till 1955, most engines where easy to convert to a fuel pump so were converted, the pressure fittings are very difficult to find today.

Re: merc pressure tanks?

I have a MK20 which uses the old round-style Merc pressure fitting. The tank that came with it is in mint condition including the inside. When I retire I'm gonna restore that motor to its former glory. The old ones sure were cool!

BTW if you run across one of the ol' birds that used a pressure tank, and you can find the Merc fitting, you can always use an OMC pressure tank. There's a lot more of them kicking around at 'reasonable' prices, than the Merc tanks.

As Laddies said, it's a lot easier to convert them to a fuel pump, most are set up so you can do that. When I resurrect one of the old Johnrude pressure-fed motors I usually will upgrade it to a 'modern' fuel pump and single-line hose. I'm gonna leave my Merc stock, for originality's sake.

Fuel pumps are lots safer, also. Imagine the product liability suits nowadays if this system were still in use; unplug the pressurized tank and the fitting leaks, spraying atomized fuel all over the place! Lite 'em up, boys, smoke 'em if you got 'em!!!!! BOOM!!! ;)

Cheers.............ed

Re: merc pressure tanks?

thanks guys, the mark 25 is 1955 vintage, but is not complete so it is not a contender to fix up yet. I have a whack of johnny/rudes that are pressure tank ones, up to '58 i guess. I think i have 6 of those tanks right now and at least that many motors, i may convert some of them to fuel pumps. I have some parts motors with the fuel pump bypass covers so should not be too hard. Thanks again!!

The Mark 25 came with a fuel pump. 1955 was the crossover year, with leftover Mark 20s coming with pressure systems and new Mark 25s having the fuel pump.
