Seen an oil spot under my prop today.Oil appears to be coming from the prop shaft seal. Can anyone tell me if I am going to need any special tools for this job?
Ive had the sterndrive off several times and split the case also for water pump replacement but have never gone in behind the prop. Thanks for all replies.
1974 mercruiser inline 6 165hp (model 1?)

You dont need special tools but a punch ,the same size and shape as the seal would make the job a lot easier.Charlie

Hey my brother Rich, no disrespect, but a seal that is 30 years old has a right to give up......but you are right in thinking about other causes.............

Hello
no special tools required. a couple big hammers and a large cresnt screw driver.
actually to do this and check the shaft and such you will need the spanner wrench to remove the large spanner nut that holds the bearing carrier in place.if this has seen much salt you may have to drill several holes in it and cut it out in pieces. then you will need a puller for the carrier. if it is tight the one merc sells is usless. use the J-bolt jaw type puller from omc or the puller from precision tools. after that its pretty simple.
good luck and keep us posted

The answer is ...Fishing line.
The spanner nut has had just enough oil dripping on it to give the threads a good soaking. So not a big deal to remove. Thanks all>
