merc shaft length

Hi Guys'
I have a 1968 MFG Edinboro fiberglass lapstrake. I have begun a full restoration on her. Originally, she had a Merc 65 hp motor on it. However it was long gone when I bought the boat. I am looking for another. My question is.... If my transom measures 20 and a half inches at it's tallest point, what size motor shaft should I be looking for?

Long shaft if it mesures 20" in the center, Whats this supersizing all about wasting space?
