Merc Shift cable problem?

I recently purchased a 1965 Starcraft Cheiftain. It has a 120 hp.

Original thread here: http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=448824

Just got the motor running this afternoon after some basic tune up and having the carb cleaned up and new float installed.

However when I removed the carb I also disconnected the shifter cable to make it easier. The cable was disconnected from the carb and at the transom.

Now it does not seem to engage into gear until almost at full throttle in either fwd or rev.

I have a manual but to be honest I do not understand the instructions very well.

It may have been this way when I got it, not really sure since I only got it to run today.

Any assistance would be fantastic

Thanks

OMG, no wonder. You can't use a knee pad for a service manual, Here is a link to download the OEM service. Shouldn't take long for you to figure out the difference in manuals.

http://www.4shared.com/document/ozc1_97A/Service_Manual_01.html

It's a HUGE file, so give it time to download.

Section 2B page 12 should get you started.

Thanks for the link.

12 hour download and file is corrupted. I hate computers, lol.

Can you give me any information on how to adjust those cables for now and I will try again another time to download the whole manual?

Thanks

Okay tried again to download manual this morning and my virus program wont allow the page to open. Even if I add it to the "safe" list.
Says that site is marked as Dangerous.
I could really use some help here.
thanks

Sounds like your computer is so safe it's unuseable. Might want to search around ebay for a used #1 Mercruiser service manual PN 90-68648. It covers your engine and drive.
Since it's only 4 pages you need right now, here they are.
