Re: merc smartcraft tools

Not sure what you are asking about here hudman, Smartcraft is a type of gauge setup installed in the dash. And, yes it does give engine hours. Or there is designated diagostic tools as rodbolt was talking about.
However, if you don't have an engine with EFI, then you can't hook it up to anything. Then engine needs to have an ECM. In a previous post, you said you have a carbed, non vortec 350. So it wouldn't have an ECM and you couldn't hook anything to it.
But, to answer your question, YES you can buy the stuff if you want it.

Re: merc smartcraft tools

Yes, that is my current setup, but the engine had a dropped valve or some other internal problem. I have just ordered a mercruiser 383 magnum mpi motor complete. what do I need to get engine readout? is this already on the motor, or do I need something else? Ive been told that the new engine will plug up to my existing harness and be a simple swap over. I just want to be able to tell more about what is going on with the new one. thanks for your help, Don in particular,,, your vast knowledge of mercruiser stuff really shows....
thanks again.
hud

Re: merc smartcraft tools

The first thing you need to do start at the link below and figure out exactly what you want. As dave's link shows, there is more than one SC 1000.
None of it is hard to install if you can follow the installation and instruction manuals.

http://www.mercurymarine.com/smartcraft

This from the smartcraft manual. Do you have the 555 ECM?

NOTE: All MerCruiser product equipped with a 555 Controller, ECM, or PCM, are capable
of using SmartCraft Instrumentation Systems (SC1000 System Monitor, System
Tachometer/Speedometer and SC 5000 System View).
