I removed the lower unit from my Alpha 1 Gen 2 the other day to replace the water pump. Went a lot easier than I thought it was going to. Had the service manual, (thanks Don!) and the seloc as well as some good advice from the forum here and it came off and went back on with no problems.
Dunno about totally disassembling the lower if thats what you plan to do. Lots of special tools and expertise required. But just taking the lower off and putting it back on was pretty easy in my opinion. If they can fix the skeg with the guts still inside then it sounds like no problem. Don and the other guys will know for sure though. Just my 2 cents.
