My skeg is broken off and needs to be repaired. I wanted to known if it is difficult to remove the lower half? Does anyone know the procedures on R & R ing the lower half and what parts do I need to put it back together. Are there any things that I should be aware of when doing this myself.

Ya seem to have this in the wrong section. If ya read a bit further, you will notice that there is a merc/mariner forum down below. This place is just for concerns to do with the forum software as it was completely changed last night/this morning.

Now that the MODS have put your post in the proper place, what year and model of outdrive are you talking about.

Re: Merc stern drive lower half removal

I removed the lower unit from my Alpha 1 Gen 2 the other day to replace the water pump. Went a lot easier than I thought it was going to. Had the service manual, (thanks Don!) and the seloc as well as some good advice from the forum here and it came off and went back on with no problems.

Dunno about totally disassembling the lower if thats what you plan to do. Lots of special tools and expertise required. But just taking the lower off and putting it back on was pretty easy in my opinion. If they can fix the skeg with the guts still inside then it sounds like no problem. Don and the other guys will know for sure though. Just my 2 cents.

I found it quite easy to just drop the lower unit without removing the whole drive from the boat. This was my first time doing it and it was fairly easy to line back when putting it back on. Helps to have someone to help hold it though, its kinda heavy.

Thanks for all the help and the link to the manual for the outdrives. Do you know how I would get links to the manual for the 4.3 liter engines. Thanks in advance for your anticipated response.

No online manual for your year engine. Only the drive.
