I have a `70s Gulfstream I`m fixing up never had in water yet and have no prop drive(it just spin`s freely) and I noticed when I took water hose connection off there were little pieces of what look like rubber trying to come out of the little holes:eek:. I would like to understand how it work`s, and what broke. Can someone show me a link to a blow up of the internal`s.

Re: Merc sterndrive isues

Sounds like someone burned up the impeller and it got sucked up into the cooling system. You will need to replace the impeller as well as go through the entire cooling system, manifold, risers circulating pump, etc and make sure you got all the rubber parts out.

Hopefully that didnt cause the engine to overheat at one time and cause other problems.

Not sure if its something you did, but it goes without saying, NEVER run the engine without providing water through muffs to the outdrive. Also running in the driveway isn't made for reving the engine, etc.

Don;t attempt to start the engine untill you have replaced the impeller and got all parts out of the cooling system.

Joy`s of a free used boat, who know`s what they did. Guess I will learn how to rebuild it.
