I have a early 70's 80hp Merc. It has the original t/t set-up on it but does not tilt up very far at all, which I would like it to to do when putting in the water/taking out. For the life of me I can not find how to make adjustments on the tilt. It is an original elec/hyd set-up for this motor. The fella (a family friend) who had bought it and the boat new has been in declining health mentally (Alz) Normally he would be of great help on this as he took excellent care of the boat/motor since new but this is the way things are and are not getting any better. Any help would be great..Thank you!

Re: Merc tilt/trim adj?????

Byran, These motors were set up to trim out using the center button on the dashboard, and then tilt up all the way using both center and top button. There was an adjustable trim switch on the starboard trim cylinder bracket on the motor. Look for the stainless steel screw and turn it in or out. The amount of trim could be adjusted there.

Also, the motors could be tilted all the way up using the power unit, and then tilted more by hand and the manual tilt lock engaged.

PS. I bypassed my trim switch 20 years ago, when it failed. It is only a feature designed to protect the motor from too much trim!

Hey Chris1956! thanks that is a big help! You nailed it , you know just what motor I am talking about. I have the 3 buttons but have never tried teh center and top together. All I knew is that the top did not work by itself. By the way, have you ever had a problem with this motor not starting good when cold, i.e. spins, no fire, then let it sit for a bit then boonm it will fire right off.....???

Thanks Again!

Bryan

Re: Merc tilt/trim adj?????

Bryan,

All Mercs and Mercruisers used that same trim panel until some time in the 80's.

And these engines liked LOTS of gas to start cold. Try squeezing the primer until it's really hard, then hold the choke on until it fires.

Chris.............
