My 1995 60 hp Bigfoot has power tilt problems. I'm in the process of trying to remove the Power Trim System. The manual (Factory) just says remove the "Trilobe Pin" in the top of the shock rod. Sounds real easy, but how in the world do you do that? I tapped the lower one out with little problem; however the upper is not available for knocking out with a punch from the rear. Does Merc have a special tool that pulls these things out? I can imagine a tiny puller, but have never seen one! My local guy quotes $75 per with no accurate guess as to how long for the job. :(

Re: Merc Trilobe Pin Removal

The easiest way I found to remove those pins is to have the motor fully down, hoist it and then knock the pin out from the front.

Chris.............

Re: Merc Trilobe Pin Removal

Remove the Trilobe Pin sounded easy; if you have ever seen one before. Well I did it on my Optimax 135 after a few sessions, $ 30 worth of new Vice Grips from Vice Grip and Husky.
In short, with the motor in the raised position and the two support braces I made in place (1.5 inch channel with bolts to the motor and the motor mount), I used an old screw driver and hammered as a wedge to start the Trilobe Pin to move out. This worked to gain me about 1/8 inch and that was all that could be gained from this tool. Fortunately, I found a small crow bar in the war chest that had a small hammer like claw that could be hammered into place on the Trilobe Pin and gained a little more extraction. From here I attached a good pair of Vice Grips (tip on) to the head of the Trilobe Pin and used my Dent Puller. The Dent Puller right angle attachment was slipped into the opening remaining in between the Vice Grip jaws and activation of the Dent Puller proved successful. This took a few tries as the Vice Grips would often slip off of the Trilobe Pin head. I have photos but have not been successful in attaching them. Need a photo email me - b.smith@cogeco.ca
