Not if the motor is in good tune (carbs adjusted properly, good spark), and the gas-oil mixture is fresh.

Agreed-------A motor running properly just does not foul plugs running at 50:1 pre-mix.

good habit with carb mercs when idling long periods is keep motor trimmed level or a touch positive.. jmo.

I know that's the case with the inline 6s, I thought the V6 weren't as intolerant

Jimmbo, I agree. My Merc V6 idles a lot better than my Merc 1500 IL6. Of course that 1500 was a finicky one...

My experience with the inline 150s, was a nice smooth idle, but they weren't happy between 2000 to 4000 rpm, rough and jittery. From 4000 to 6000, it really hauled a**. I guess the aggressive Porting and big Carbs will do that

Jimmbo, My 1500 would idle pretty good if the fuel was freshly mixed that AM. Day old fuel (or older) made her idle progressively poorly, and you needed some cold start lever if in neutral.

She had some power from idle until 3000RPM. However, at 3000RPM, the power really rolled on all the way to WOT.

For example, if pulling a slalom skier with a 21P prop, you use full throttle to get them up. If you didn't feather the throttle back, as you approached 3200 RPM, the skier would get launched out of their ski, as the RPM would hit 3500 in 2 seconds, and 4000 RPM in 4 sec.
