Merc V6 Oil Alarm woes

I'm having hair pulling problems with my 94 Black Max 2.5l V6. The oil warning alarm goes off after about 10-15mins running time. The float checks out OK with a voltmeter, so I suspected the rotary motion sensor. I've removed the oil pump, I can just about see all the drive teeth and they look fine, and when I turn the motor over by hand the drive to the oil pump doesn't slip, so I'm fairly sure my motor is getting oil. Changed the rotary motion sensor which here in the UK is very expensive, but I still get the alarm after about 10 minutes. So like a good troubleshooter I got a manual, and at the same time noticed that the voltmeter is against the stops with the engine running at about 1000rpm. The good ole manual suggests that the warning module needs to be fed the correct supply voltage to function correctly. Could the alarm problem be caused by excess voltage? If so where on earth do I start to look? I've read all the posts at it seems that these engines don't have a voltage regulator..... Help please
