Merc vs Volvo

We are looking for a bigger boat so that we can pull skiers and tubes and invite more people. I like the Bowrider I/O design and am looking for a V-8.


I have been an avid reader of the iBoats forums and have gleaned off that the Mercruiser is the best I/O you can get, but I see many boats with the Volvo. So my question is how good is a Volvo outdrive?

Volvo Pentas are just fine, but since they are less common than MerCruisers, it's possible you'll have a problem getting someone local to work on them. Some pars are also more expensive.

Generally the Volvos are about the most robust drives out there.

Mercruiser has the lions share of the market here, while the opposite is true in Europe.

A consideration might be what support is available in your area.

If I was looking at 2 identical boats and one had Volvo and one had Mercruiser I would pick the Volvo. Since you rarely have a choice like that, either is fine to get.

Agree, if we're talking about a Volvo SX vs. Merc Alpha One.

I dont think you can go wrong either way if considering a Bravo powered boat.
