merc w/ strange noise.

Hi all I have a 1975 mercury 1150 with a strange noise in it. It sounds like a tapping noise and I can?t seem to narrow down were it is from. I was told that it could be piston to cylinder wall clearance because of the year. I got the engine second hand but it looks very clean and cared for. what would you recommend doing?

Have you checked the flywheel flex plate?

Check flywheel plate as Laddies suggested,also check lower unit oil as a chipped pinion gear will tranfer noise up driveshaft. Check compression on #6 if it is lower than rest the botton crank bearing may be failing.

I will be checking it this next week, and will let you know what I find thank you for the ideas I really felt like I was hitting my head against the dock trying to locate this tapping/ticking noise
