first off i have a merc marine 50 with super thunderbolt ignition. so i have spent hours slaving away on this motor and cleaning parts. first i dissassembled and cleaned the starter motor throughly then used jumper cables to test it and it works fine so i put it back in. went to test it and the solenoid clicks but spindal wont turn. tested the battery its good. i replaced the solenoid and got the same problem. i have replaced old cracked wires. so i know its not just a bad wire. the crazy thing is that if i dissconnect the starter motor but leave it mounted in the engine and connect jumper cables it wont move at all. im so confused as to whats going on. any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Take your running car and put the red jump lead from your car battery and touch it against the wire from the solinoid to the starter. If your starter turns your engine then your starter is good. I say to use your running car because that way you are certain to be getting the amps.
If she turns then check your solinoid. Get someone to Turn your key. You say your hearing a click but are you then getting 12 volts at the base of your starter motor? Now you may be getting 12 volts but the amps may not be there due to poor cableing. I think you need to recheck everything.
You should get on fine if you can use a multimeter.
Another wee trick I used while testing my solinoid on the engine is to use a battery charger with crocodile clips. Connect them directly onto the small terminals on the fully connected solinoid. This eliminates your ignition and send the battery power to the starter.
Good luck
