I've been working my way thru the 3.0 bog hessitation posts. I also have that problem. Great info, but have not seen my problem yet. When I took mine apart to rebuild it, the was no ball. My rebuild kit shows 2 versions, both with balls. I need to know where it goes-either in the center of the well, or off to the side in the little indentation. I've posted a video of the carb on Youtube- here is a link:

I can't see what would hold it in place. I know it needs to seat to do it's job. I'm going to raise the float level. I saw the one about the accel. pump-used on larger motors so I need to use one of the 3 holes to lower the output. But if I'm lean on transition, wouldn't that be backwards-I was thinking of moving the arm to the hole that provides more volume, not less. Thanks, Dennis

You can put some gas in the bowl as it sits, and install the accelerator pump and return spring then manually operate the pump by pressing down on it to see if it works.

It's possible it went here.

I don't have the answer for you, but simply wanted to say your video is a great idea. You explained the question very clearly! d:)

Now - those who are smarter than me can answer your question!

Re: Mercarb acc. pump check ball?

Thanks, guys. In the diagram, mine has that keeper and ball in place. It's the ball and keeper in my rebuild instructions shown below the acc. pump that I can't figure where to put, or what good it would do to just drop them in there. I'm going to order some 160's and 165's main jets today if I can find them. Where is everyone going for those?

"If" it does go under the accelerator pump, it goes in the small hole (aluminum ball) and the accelerator pump return spring keeps it in place.

Re: Mercarb acc. pump check ball?

Google found this-a 5 page pdf bulletin covering mercarb issues for the 4 banger and other engines. It says to remove the ball under the pump if one is there, is was used as a travel limiter, and other things to check. Also the float drop is wrong on my rebuild sheet, as compared to this bulletin. I wanted to provide the link, but unfortunatly, can't seem to find it again. I did download it. Maybe someone knows how to access all bulletins, recalls, etc.

Re: Mercarb acc. pump check ball?

I know this is an old thread - but just in case anyone (like me) is surfing through with a similar problem - here's what I found with my engine:

My 3.0L was bogging when going from idle to WOT (when pulling skiers up etc). Classic problem with accelerator pump I suspected.

I ordered the carb rebuild kit and stripped down the mercarb. There was evidence of the previous owner having done a rebuld, but this was a bad job (Muppet?) and a number of fasteners were chewed - even one of the main jets!

Anyway, the guy had installed the new accelerator pump, but it was obvious that the accelerator pump discharge ball and spring retainer (the little T-shaped thing) had not beed removed. I had to pull *hard* to get this out, and the spring underneath was quite corroded. Then I expected the ball to fall out when the carb body was inverted - but no joy. Also - when I put back in the accelerator pump and manually operated it (with some WD40 in the chamber) nothing came out of the discharge port.

After a poke about, the ball freed up and came out - as it had been completely rusted and stuck to the bottom of the drilling.

Carb rebuild is now underway, and I'm sure this will fix the bog.

Moral of the tale:

Make sure you change your water/fuel seperator filter regularly - as a small amount of water in the bowl will rust the accelerator pump ball solid.
