Hey guys i gota question what voltage my choke is supposed to be getting. I can't find my skematic for my motor (1988 mercruiser 3.0 L 4 cly with alpha 1 leg) but it seems the choke dosnt stay open like it should. With motor warmed up its maybe 40% open. I didnt check if this is how it was running wheni had her out on sunday but it seemed to run just fine. It was only getting like 2.5 volts to choke. Should it be hooked into the ign for 12 + volts ? Or off the resistance wire going to coil ?

BTW. i did have this carb rebuilt and the choke is brand new.

thanks in advance

Big-E

The ign. switch supplies the choke 12+ volts and then the resister wire reduces the voltage to the coil, you need to adjuct the choke by leaning it out--Bob

If you are only getting 2.5V to the choke, you may have a corroded connection in the wiring going to the choke. You need to be seeing full ignition voltage to the choke.
Adjusting the choke will not change the voltage.

Thanks Don, i thought it should get 12 v's. I may just run a new wire to the choke. I ran new wires to pretty much everything else.. lol

thanks

Big-E

If you're running new wires to "Almost Everything" then it's time to do what I did. Rewire the engine.
Mine had more corroded connections that everytime I went out something else went bad.
Got the proper color wires, all 14ga. minimum pretinned wire, crimped and soldered new ends and heat shrinked every connection.
Haven't had an electrical problem for 3 years now.

Aldo
NO, I didn't have problems, I was just testing out some wiring/corrosion theories that were bothering me......
