I have a 1996 Crownline 225 CCR with the Mercruiser 5.7L (Eng ser. # 0F793775).

Since i have bought the boat, it has been a bear to start off of idle. Actually it won't start off of idle, I have to push the throttle up approx. 1/4-1/2 and let it crank and crank until it eventually starts...After it starts it runs totally fine, no hesitation, no burping, etc...It does this when it is warm or cold. IE..I will pull into a cove and shut down to swim for a little bit (15 mins.), then jump back in and try to start and it will crank and crank until I give it some throttle, then it'll eventually start. If I turn it off and then immediately turn it back on (less than 30 seconds), it starts up just fine off of idle without any throttle.

I figured the Mercarb needed rebuilt, so I had it totally rebuilt to factory specs. Problem is still there with no difference. After the engine eventually starts it idles fine (600-700 RPM), runs fine, etc. I am pulling my hair out over this. I have yet to replace the fuel filter, and that will be my next step. It seems as if it is losing fuel prime and has to build up pressure again before it will start...I was under the impression that the bowl in the carb stores fuel so that re-starts are easier and quicker.

It is quite embarrasing when I pull into a cove and shut it down, only to have to crank and crank until it starts back up. My friend with a 1997 Holley Carbed 4 Winns takes less than one crank from the starter to restart with no throttle persuasion (starts right off of idle). Mine takes forever and the throttle has to be persuaded!

Could this be a fuel pump issue? I am pulling my hair out on this...

on you initial cold start you may need to pump the throttle 2-3 times ,then put it slightly above idle setting and turn the key.

Yes, I can understand why I would need to do this on cold start-ups, but I don't feel as if I should have to do that on warm starts...it's to the point to where I feel as if I am going to burn my starter up, it cranks so much...

I know, I know! Haha! But my buddy with the carb'ed penta starts his right up! Not understanding why mine isn't doing the same...his has more hours and isn't taken care of as well!

I read over Don S' fuel system checklist pre-engine and none of them seem to apply to my situation. After it starts there is no hesitation throughout the entire RPM band...
