another one for you my 84searay 245 cuddyfishermen has a 260 merc on it and theres a fin like thing that sticks down from the lower case to offset the turning of the prop in the steerin over the past 4 years ive lost 6 of them dont know why is there a reason? and with power steerin i heard this thing isnt even nessasary is this true

You really dont need it as far as steering goes. Most are corrosion zincs, though, cant remember if it is on yours. Mercruiser also makes a replacement that is just flat, without the fin. Newer Alpha's have it, and should bolt on just the same. I wonder why you keep losing them? I would worry one would fall into the prop.I would put a stainless lock washer on the bolt next time.
