I have a mid seventies (serial number starts with 410...) 20 HP merc shortshaft with a mercontrol remote control.

The problem that I'm having is when you shift the control lever forward, the engine is placed into reverse and vice versa.

The splines are lined up correctly on the lower unit because neutral is where it should be.

The throttle is working fine its just the shift lever positions are swapped. This is why I think the problem lies within the mercontrol unit.

The one thing i noticed is that on the shift linkage on the engine, the barrel on the shift linkage does the actual moving and the eyelet on the end of the shift cable is held stationary. On the throttle side its the opposite. The barrel is held stationary and the eyelet on the end of the throttle cable does the moving. Is there some way to open up the mercontrol control box and change the way the cable moves with respect to the control lever postion, to accomodate this motor?

I would like to get it set up so when you push the lever forward the boat goes forward!

Thanks For Your Help!!!

Hmm. Sounds weird. The box can be taken apart, but I don't think you can change the way of operation. I've seen a box mounted upside down, once, and that caused the same situation...

Just to make sure: The gear cable is the one that moves first when the remote lever is moved, then stops and stays while the gas cable takes over.

Before continuing: Remove plug leads, note the order.

When you engage forward on the motor lever and turn the flywheel (pull the starting rope) does the prop turn in a direction that will make it move forward?

If not you have a prop designed for opposite direction (LH/RH). If you can, get the numbers from the prop hub to verify.

When I move the remote control lever the shift cable is moving first and then the gas cable takes over.

Additionally when you place the motor into forward gear and pull the starter cord the prop does turn in a direction that would dmake the boat move forward, so a counter rotating prop is not the problem.

We are going to take apart the halves of the Mercontrol box tonight and see what we can see.

I've been getting mixed suggestions about what can be done inside the box. Some users have posted on similar threads that the boxes are designed to be mouted on either side of a boat and can be setup differntly inside to suit different applications.

Thanks for the help!

I'll post What I find out when open up the remote box.

*Yes, the box can sit either side in the boat. This is done by moving the lever but has no effect on the movement (fwd would still be the same).

Was this remote always used with this motor? Your note about the inner/outer cable moving, points towards a diffent linkage design...

I don't think that this remote was always used with this motor. I'm pretty sure that it came from a differnt application. Still haven't opened the box up yet to see what goes on in there.

Thanks!
