MerControl locking in gear

I just bought a 1975 18' Cobalt with a Mercury 233 (Chevy 350). I launched it yesterday and when I got in the water the boat stuck in gear (both forward and reverse). My control is one with a black pushbutton in the middle. The only way I could get it out of gear was to turn off the ignition, put it in neutral, re-start the engine, and put it back into gear. The MerControl lever is very loose (about 1/4-3/8 away from the plastic panel). How do I remove the lever? Is there a clip holding it in place? Do I need a special tool? The best thing to do would be re-seat the lever, but it doesn't want to be pushed up to the plastic panel. All suggestions are welcome!!! Thanks.

Re: MerControl locking in gear

i sounds like your shift interrupt switch is not working

it kills the motor long enough to allow it to come OUT of gear it should be on the motor were the shift cable from the control and the shift cable from the outdrive meet

tommays
