Can you use an automotive exhaust gasket on the
manifold? I know I would have to get the gasket for the risers from the dealer.

Thanks

Yes. Regardless what some might say ("you must only use marine parts") only exhaust comes out there. The same exhaust that comes out of a car.

I don't really know if there is a difference, but I can tell you that the marine gasket is easier to install as it is a single gasket for all four exhaust ports and the typical auto application is three seperate gaskets which make it somewhat difficult to install if the motor is in the boat.

Re: mercruise exhaust manifold gskt?

To aid in installing the gaskets and manifolds on my 1980 MerCruiser 350 freshwater cooled engine, I cut the heads off two long bolts and screwed them into the head on the end manifold mounting holes. This allowed a way to hold the gasket in place (one piece as flashback described) and then I slid the manifold onto these "studs". I installed the all the remaining bolts then removed the studs and installed the end bolts. For one guy, this made the manifold installation quite easy. Separate gaskets would have been a chore for me to install by myself.

For what it's worth...

Walt

I went and bought a gasket from the auto parts store and yes it is a pain to install without being 1 piece. But we got it...

Thanks

You can also buy manifold studs at auto parts store to do the same thing but beware when cutting just any bolts because of the "grade/strength" be sure they will withstand the require "torque" for proper mounting/sealing.

If I understand Walt correctly, those studs are just temp. so they could be made out of wood if thats all you have on hand at the time........

Flash...

I think what Fone is talking about are studs that would replace the bolts. He's cautioning about using the proper strength stud if you choose to do that. At least that's what I think he was saying..but then again....I've been boating all day, then downed a few cold adult beverages after I got home. Ok, ok...maybe I had ONE out on the river...

What I was referring to, as you said, was temporarily using a "stud" only to aid in installing the manifold. Once all the other bolts are snug...I remove the stud and install the remaining end bolts. This trick worked ok, but would have worked better had I not installed the risers first. I ended up removing the risers...it was too difficult otherwise. You do need to be careful and not snap off a stud by dropping the manifold on it or by some other means. That would suck...

Hope this helps.

Walt

PS... Don't use wood dowels...those manifolds are heavy!!
