I'm working in an 80 hp and a 90 hp. One runs. One has a rusty cylinder and the engine will have to come apart if I decide to fix it. I've looked through the manual on boatinfo and that answers many but not all questions. Apparently there is supposed to be a "water shutter" (part 38581) in the drive exhaust passage but they are missing on both of mine. Are these necessary? Can they be improvised or found? It seems there is no way to lube the universal joints or gimbal bearing on these. It this correct? Anybody know a generic number for the universals (cross & Bearing)? Apparently there is a large O ring used in attaching the drive to the transom, but it's not mentioned in the manual. What's with this? Anything in particular to look out for on these? Thanks.

Just looked in the manual and think the large O ring is the same one used in the outdrive mounting kit.a square rubber ring

It is a round O ring but I'm not sure exactly where it goes. Didn't pay enough attention when pulling the drive.

I had one of those years ago. They were Renault engines from the early 70ties. I doubt if there are any parts available. Too old. Mine eventually needed an exhaust manifold. Mercury showed NLA, no longer available. Found one but he wanted $500.00 for it. Got rid of it and bought something newer.

Bt. Doc is right. Yours is an o-ring compared to later stuff being more of a quad ring. And Bondo has the grand daddy of them all! Improvizing forever!

As far as the u-joints. Start with getting one out and measure it & start shopping. Maybe a Vega or Pinto. Who knows, something uses the same thing!
Good Luck
