Hey Guys,
I have a 120, still searching for the serial number for the engine, but I know it's early 80's, with Alpha 1 drive. It has a Rochester 2 bbl carb as well.
The issues I am having are a hesitation in throttling up, and after it gets up on plane and at 3000-3500 rpm, it will die as if you turned the key off. Also, sometimes when throttling up quick and it hesitates, it sometimes backfires as well.
It starts great, idles in neutral around 800-900 RPM, and goes in and out of gear perfectly. Just when operating in the higher range under a load it starts to have issues. It has been hesitant on the throttle for some time, but recently began dying at high RPM.
I have decided to go through the entire fuel system from the tank to the manifold. Here is how far I am so far:
- verified the fuel line from the gas tank is good. The screen in the tank itself is clean. I have replaced the fuel line from the tank to the fuel pump. However, the tank it located in the bow, and there is an inline primer bulb at the stern before it connects to the fuel pump. The bulb I have not replaced yet.
- I have replaced the fuel pump with a brand new one, though the old one seemed to be in decent shape, and the filter was surprisingly clean as well with some small bits of debris visible
- I have pulled the fuel filter from the carb, and cleaned it out completely, it was in decent shape prior as well, only a tiny bit of debris.
- With the engine off, and the carb full of fuel, I can see it squirt fuel into the barrels when opening the throttle.
I have done some test driving, varying throttle, trying to come up on plane quickly etc, and it still reacts the same. When tied to the dock, I can run it in gear at lower RPM, and you can hear the engine revs change slightly, and with a few taps of the throttle up, I can get it to backfire and stall out, though I can usually recover if I back off the throttle in time. Then it idles perfectly, and goes at lower RPMs perfectly.
This has to be a fuel issue from what I can tell, and it must be in the carb itself as well. I do have a carb rebuild kit on it's way, and a new float - which I was surprised didn't come with the kit.. I am also going to either replace or remove if it's unnecessary, the primer bulb as well.
So my questions are, has anyone else had much experience with this sort of thing? Am I on the right track with resolving this issue? What is the usual cause with the carb that creates this sort of problem?
Thank you for any help or advice you can offer!
