hi i am new to the i/o motors, i just got a 1980 18ft dixie with a 120 i/o mercruiser. its not the original motor. i had it running good in the drive way, then took it to a lake and stopped running when i put the trim down. took it back home it starts then spray water out of the carb? then doesnt continue to run, i dont think i have water in the tank.

also i have a power trim, and there are the usual purple green red and blue wires, it worked then stopped worked then stopped, where does the purple wire go, and to make sure where do they all go? all i get is a click click when i try it.

thanks sooo much'
todd

if it doesnt go to itk please fwd responses to tyaquint@kent.edu

thats a lot of things at once lets start with the water comeing from the carb

1. check the oil does it look clean or like milk
2. if the oil is good remove the spark plugs and turn over the motor be carefull if there is water in the motor in can come out of the sparkhole with great force
3. if you have water in the motor let us know will try to help you find out were it is getting in

your going to need a shop manual there are to many wires involved to explane in a short post

tommays

If it sprays water out the intake you have major problems.

Water out of the carb??

You need to pull that engine and rebuild it. There should never be water from a carb. Cracked head or a blown head gasket are my first thoughts.

try turning over the motor with the plugs out the only way the water can be comeing out of the carb is if water is in the cylinders

tommays

Re: mercruiser 120 i/o

hey tommys!! i took the plugs out turned the motor over, cleared stuff out, also hooked up a small xtra gas tank up to make sure i have good gas, then put the plugs back in and it started!! i ran it for about 10 minutes, even put it in gear ran great. i let it stall out, then i cant get it back started again. not sure if water is a problem whats my next step? if u have an email i can get u at it may be easier.

todd thanks

Re: mercruiser 120 i/o

it sounds like water was in the motor which is a problem and will damage the motor dont run it anymore until its fixed

take the plugs out again turnover the motor and blow the water out you need to pump some oil into each cylinder and turn it over to coat the parts with oil to protect them from rusting

next step check the compression you have eather a bad head gasget or a bad exaust manifold or riser allowing water into the motor

tommays

Re: mercruiser 120 i/o

the easy thing is the compression check all the cylinders should be about the same 120 -150

if two next to each other are low ther is a possable bad gasket you should have all ready put in some oil to stop the rust so your will be doing a wet test

if it tests good the next most likely thing is the manifold and riser if its orginal it is more than likely bad or very close 10 years is conisedred a long time for these parts

tommays

i also found this link on a nother post gives great detail on your problem

http://www.boatfix.com/merc/Bullet/01/01_13.pdf
