I was stranded the other day when the above happened. I was at WOT when the boat stopped. I had suspected a bad clutch dog b4 and tried adjusting the cables to at least get forward all to no avail. I have a spare LU but I grew concerned when the boat was idling and its temp (normally at 100) skyrocketed past 260. Tho I have a new LU im affraid my problem lies in the upper housing. Is there something up there that could break causing the driveshaft to come to a halt? any other ideas?

Sounds like you lost a coupler, or the upper gears in the drive, or the vertical shaft in the drive. The raw water pump in the drive is not turning.

Look for metal around the back of the coupler, check the gear lube for metal in it, or if the coupler looks good, remove the cap off the top of the drive.

After reviewing the schematics I think the issue is indeed in the upper housing gears. Clutch dogs just dont fail like that. Even if they did the water pump would still be turning. I'll know in 2 months when I can work on it again... Someone left a round in my .40 and when I attempted to remove the slide... Well lets just say I'm typing one handed. Appreciate the insight. Cheers!
