Mercruiser 140 hi idle only

Hi all!<br /><br />1985 Mercruiser 140 (3.0) I/O Starts up with throttle high.. only runs at HIGH RPM.. 2500-3000 if I back down from there, it dies right off... can catch it by feathering up the throttle again... but won't idle or run at all at lower RPMs.<br /><br />ideas/suggestions? most likely carb prob.. any specific instructions appreciated!

It sounds like you need to clean the carb or have a bad gasket on the intake system, most likely a dirty carb

could be the carb needs cleaning but sounds to me like you need to change the points ...i had exactly the same problem last year and a new set of points rotor and condenser sorted it right out.

YEP - that was it.. took the carb apart, cleaned out the aluminum corrosion/jelly and runs great.. Thanks!
