I am trying to remove the exhaust elbow assembly from the exhaust manifold from a 1984 Mercruiser 140 to be able to more easily remove the exhaust manifold to replace the head gasket, and because it leaks. It seems to be almost welded in place. I have removed the 4 nuts securing it to the manifold, but it simply won't budge. Any suggestions??? Heat??? Bigger hammer???

Hello boozer. It took me awhile to separate my elbows. What you have between them is a stainless steel shim gasket sandwiched in between two other gaskets. It takes some time, but a brass hammer will work. Don't beat it to death tho...what you want is to cause vibration. Tap it in different areas all around the elbow. Eventually you will see it start to move.

Ayuh,.... or at worse, use the block of wood as a cushion, 'tween the riser, 'n yer BFHammer,...
