Hey guy's,

I just picked up an 84 Doral Citation that is certainly in need of some work. One of the projects is the engine that is leaking on two of the cylinders. I could get another for a little over a $100, but I'm also looking on getting more power out of this thing. Is there a larger engine that will fit without any major upgrades?

Thanks,
John

Nope, even to upgrade to a 4.3, you are looking at exhaust Y's manifolds etc. Along with gear ratio change in the drive.
And a car engine is NOT the same as a marine engine.

I figured that the block and head were the same. What are the major differances?

You can do a search on the site and there is a lot of info on this subject. Assuming you will do the $100 replacement..Cam configuration is critical for performance issues as well as water intrusion. Then there are the freeze plugs. Manifolds and other life support can be transferred, if still usable. Use your own judgment, if the mods are cheaper than a marine rebuilt engine, and you use the boat for recreation rather than commercial...do the conversion. IMHO.

I'm planning to test each cylinder and see if the present problem is with the valves or the rings and take it from there. If the rings are still good, I may just do the head this year and wait till the I pull the boat out at the end of the year and do some serious work on her. I just want to get it ready for now and enjoy this summer.
Thanks,

?
Did I miss where he said what engine this Doral has in it. EDIT: duh! I see it now...

Check the hull underside near the transom - those old Doral's were really bad for osmosis...

Thanks, that I will. Once I cut out the old subfloor this weekend, I'll be avble to take a good look at her. From the outside, the hull is in great condition, just a little faded from the years. I'm going to start her this weekend and see what that engine sounds like to.
Wish me luck.
