Don't want a mechanic touchin her manifold? Great site. Read a lot of posts. Here goes. I got a mercruiser 140 from 1971. GM inline 4. has a 2 barrell Rochester carb. after I bought it I noticed rust in gas tank. Replaced tank and all fuel lines and rebuilt carb back to spec. That was pretty easy and fun. Got every measurement precise. have no doubts bout that. Rebuilt distributor since couldn't get new one. However have replaced condenser and point and cap and plugs and wires. Did a compression test today and almost 120 across board. First stroke the gauge would jump hard with each cylinder. So pretty sure all is ok here. and got timing set to 6' btdc. It has a mechanical advance that looks great. No rust and all looks to function well. This all made this boat run much better except for a very slight miss when on it good. And when you rev it up real quick there is a puff of black smoke. But then you don't see the smoke anymore. Only for that short burst. Oh and plugs are gapped at .035. Think that's correct. Any ideas before someone elses hands are on her parts. Thanks

Black is fuel. You can try bending the accelerator pump rod a bit with 2 pairs of plier to shorten up it's stroke. That will lessen the amount of fuel discharged by the carb into the motor on hard acceleration.

Cool will try that. Might that also be the cause for slight miss. and also there are two spring loaded screws at bottom of carb. One looks to be for each cylinder. I also heard that one is for air mixture and one is for fuel mixture. I thought they were both fuel mixtures just for each barrell. ?

Those are your idle mixture screws, the best way to adjust them is with a vacum gauge, I don't have one so I do it this way. With the engine idling and warmed up, preferably in the water not on muffs, turn the screws in clockwise slowly till the engine starts to stumble, then back out very slowly till you obtain the best rpm and idle,
then turn it back in a 1/4 turn. Do the same with the other screw, two barrel carb one for each side.
