My 85 sea ray was running good except for about a 3 times a day it would go dead or stutter for no apparent reason while cruising almost like the fuel was cut off. Then sat. it went dead while heading back to the cabin and I could not get to start back. Anybody experienced this and where should I start looking for the problem. I didnt have any of my tools with me so I didnt get a chance to check to see if the plugs were getting spark. Any help would be much appreciatted.

Since it's an intermittant problem, I would think its a fuel issue. Check your water separator and fuel filter for starters.

I dont think it has a water separator or filter. I did not see one and the local boat shop said that it did not have one.

I would suggest you put a seperator on there. When you say it went dead, was it turning over just would not start, or does it not turn over?

Re: Mercruiser 140

It will turn over fine, just want start now. Before it finally quit and wouldnt start, it seamed like somebody hit the kill switch when it would stutter, but then it would crank back up. Almost like somebody was pinching the fuel line. Of course I didnt have any tools with me this weekend, but when I go back I am going to check and see if the fuel pump is working and see if the plugs are getting spark. Are there any other things that I can check relatively easily.

Could it be a vapor lock problem? I've seen a Merc bulletin that addressed this. See if venting the engine compartment helps. I sometimes have a similar problem re-starting after it warms up.

Not sure I know what you mean by vapor lock. I dont trust the blower(sounds sick) so I always pull the engine compartment open before I start it.
