I have mercruiser 160 1968 and the 2 side covers (push rod covers) on the side of the engine where leaking oil so I when to the mercruiser dealer and they happen to have the gaskets in stock but they were as old as the boat in this faded out mercruiser paper they are a rubber material and you could see they been sitting around a while but they didnt seem cracked or stiff so I installed them and there leaking now could the gaskets be no good anymore and should I put some gasket sealant on them. the ones I took off were a cork material.

rubber material

Next time you replace these gaskets, squirt them down with 303 Aerospace Protectant before you install them. The protectant will revitalize them.

just take them off, wipe off all the oil on the gasket, the block, and the rod cover with acetone. then put a light coat of perfect seal on everything and put it back together.
may want to check the cover with a straight edge to make sure it's not warped.
