I am rewiring my boat and removing the old resistor wire. according to diagrams (which none even have the correct color coding as my wires), my resisted wire is between the coil and the engine harness plug. I am going to replace with a ballast resistor, i was planning to mount it under the dash, or is it required to be closer to the engine? does it mater?

should be mounted on the motor as they get warm

and yes, your older motor would not have been wired to todays standard color codes.

just out of curiosity, what is the issue with resistance wire? its been operating for 40 years

wouldn't engine heat make the resistance continue to grow too high?
