mercruiser 165 cooling system questions

can some one tell me how the cooling system is supposed to operate on my motor? does the motor get its coolingwater from the pump in the foot,or is it supposed to be a closed loop system? the model number on the motor says mcm 165 and according to the manual i downloaded, the only reference to this model says it should be (seawater cooled) i hope i am wrong because if not there a few parts missing from my motor. can someone please straighten me out on this one,thanks

This is for the GM inline 6 cylinder
how many cylinder do you have bevcause it could be the 470-488 Mercruiser FWC motor Manual #8

my motor is an inline six cylinder . i think i have narrowed down the problem to needing a new water pump in the foot . i have run the boat on a hose and not getting water out of anywhere except around the hose boot . looks like pump is not operating properly and there appaers to be no flow on any of the hoses located on the front of the motor
