The raw water cooling flow on my rebuilt Merc 165 was set up a bit differently than the Merc manuals show. Merc has the raw water flowing from the thermostat housing into the forward end of the manifold, back through the manifold, and out through the riser.

The rebuilder set this one up so the raw water flows from the thermostat to the back end of the manifold, forward through the manifold to the front end, then back through a hose to the side of the riser. There is a 100% blocking plate between the manifold and the riser.

I found a diagram from HGE Marine Engine Products showing this latter arrangement, so I guess the rebuilder wasn't the first to try this.

Anyone have any thoughts on the benefits of one setup over the other?

It's called 'water reversal', and Merc released a kit to do that in the 80s.. it's to stop the manifold from cracking due to hot spots developing.
