Can you trim up when it's not in gear?
Usually on those older drives the trim limit switch no longer works and is also not available.
You have to use the trailer up button to trim up which sounds like you are doing.

i cannot trip UP when in gear,

Ayuh,.... So what does it do, when ya push both buttons in gear,..??

The reverse-lock is plumbed into it somewhere, don't remember the details,.....
Should go up in forward though,....

i have the same set up but i had to disconnect the top button (can't remember why), anyway i think the middle up is for trimming while under way on the water but will stop at a certain point for safety reasons. inorder to put the drive fully up you have to press both up buttons together. its a safety feature to prevent trimming too far up while moving.

Hello. I have the same system that i am re wiring. In my readings i discovered that holding the 2 top buttons bypasses the trim limit switch on port side of sterndrive. I would suggest your switch is faulty or wire disconnected. .

hope that helps

Hello. I have the same setup on my 1975 Airslot with a Mercruiser 165HP engine. Just got it three weeks ago and I'm fairly confused with this three button trim setup. I'm actually experiencing a situation where trimming all the way up with the two up buttons gets the outdrive stuck in up position. I wedge it out by simply pressing down on it lightly and down trim works again.
So from what I'm reading here, the middle up button is the Trail button which limits how far up the trim goes? Can I then just be using this middle button and forget about the top up button?

I explain how it all works HERE...

The only thing that differs is the inclusion of a 'Reverse inter-lock switch' used on early model Prestolite pumps that didn't have an internal valve. Here's a full drawing of the system, I have added the reverse lock valve switch for clarity.
