Mercruiser 165 will not go into forward.

i was test running it a month ago all good. i did some cleaning up of the wires now it will not go into forward. i removed the cable from the control box and it goes forward so i know its not in the control box. what would cause this? i haven't monkeyed with anything in the rear except zip tying up some wires and cables. its like im hitting a wall as if something has it locked from forward

Ayuh,...... My guess is, 1 of those was the lower shift cable, 'n you put a bind in it,......

i can see where the cable connects it jiggles but thats it and doesnt seem tight.

Also I replaced motor. Compression is good 135-145 all cylinders. Got #1 tdc on compression n crank timing mark still out bout 90 degrees. Possibly harmonic balance moved. Motor doesn’t vibrate. Did best can timing. Only get 35mph. Dwell is set bout 37. Lucky to find a motor merc 165. Ran good Any suggestions thanks. Oh it’s a 1979/78 fiberking i/o
got one wire off harness near starter n power trim brown with white stripe can’t remember where it goes. Oops lol

I got 79 merc 165 with merc out drive n out of water shifts fine. It the water won’t go into neutral unless shut off motor. Any suggestions

shift interupter not working or not wired correctly
