My starter is out in my `75 Gulfstream with a Mercruiser 165HP six engine. I could send it out for a rebuild or would a GM starter for a 250CID be the same. Even better maybe a high torque unit. Just need ideas. I am learning that most parts are special to marine purpose so I would rather ask. Thanks boaters.

no.....the starter is a marine unit.....anything that can cause a spark....or leak fuel must be marine........it is very dangerous to have a non marine starter in a boat.
i dont care what the people at the local car shop say........one word........BOOM !

you can have your boat starter rebuilt by a local starter/alternator shop for around 200 bux.

Nope, don't use an auto starter. They are not spark arrested, therefore not USCG certified. Will it bolt up and work? Yep... until you get fuel vapors in the hull. Then you will know what an IED feels like up close. LOL

Rebuild your old one. Make sure they replace the bushings too.

I took it to a rebuilder and he said it isnt a marine starter just an ordinary car starter. So trash can it goes and he had a correct starter there for me. So my boat and I thank you for the advise. No CABOOM !!

Truth be told - even the manufacturers were not too careful with the old stuff back in the day. Much more attention given to things like safety today.

You can get a new starter here on iboats - or many have had good luck with this site which has some pretty good prices.

If you need a marine starter I have an extra one... I'd be willing to part with pretty cheap.

Shoot me a PM if interested.

I am pretty sure the one I took out was not original, I have found some other questionable repairs done since I got the boat. Thanks for the link I might need it.

Good job on the starter! Always leave the engine better than when you started... lol pun intended.

If you want to to use an auto starter, you must dissassemble both the new unit, and the original marine unit and swap all the marine parts over. The nose, the seperartor plate, the end plate if different and the rubber grommet leading to the field coil terminal.
