Ive got a 86 mercruiser 170(470) motor im doing the cam seals on. i havent pulled the timing cover yet. I was wondering why they say you need to remove the front engine mount to do this? i looked at it and unless the alignment dowels are over an inch long ive got clearance all the way around it. ide rather not disturb the mount and have to re align my motor.

Also, do i need to drain oil?

If you have the room you do not have to mess with the mount. No. Be very careful with the covers, torque them carefully they can crack quite easily:facepalm:

Yes you should drain the oil because whenever you pull off that timing cover you must change the oil pan gasket. When you pull it apart you will see that there are 4 or five bolts that come up from the oil pan into that front cover that have to be taken out. As far as the mount; that shouldn't be an issue leave it where it is..Good Luck Bill

Hate to disagree, but you do not have to replace the pan gasket. I am not even sure if you can replace it with the motor in the boat. Remove the cover carefully and the gasket should be OK.
