For those that are up grading to a Pertronix 12 volt coil to go with the Pertronix pointless inginition, I have figured out how to bypass the ballast resistor wire. Apparently there are 2 wires joined together via spade lug at the positive side of coil, mine are white and not so white in color. These go to the starter and one is the resistor wire and the other is not a resistor wire. When you apply voltage to the starter the non resistor wire carries 12 volts to the coil for a "hotter" spark and when you the engine cranks the resistor wire is then the source to the coil and it drops the voltage to a lower reading. Some say 10 volts... anyway, the Pertronix coil is capable of operating at 12volts so it does not like the resistor wire. All I did was simply remove the 2 factory wires from the positive terminal of the coil and route me a "switched" 12 volt wire in its place. My switched source wire is a purple wire with no stripe about 18 gage in size.
When all was said and done I had the positive lead of the iginitor and the new purple wire going to the positive terminal and the negative has the same wires it came with with the addition only the negative lead from the new ignitor.
Hopefully, this will cure my skipping problem I have after running for about 20 30 minutes.
PS I did leave the 2 factory resistor wires in place just in case I have a problem on the water I can revert back to the original set up. I also will carry the coil and the points in the boat.
Nick Nichols
Madison,Al

From where did you route the switched wire? If you really mean it is 18 gauge wire, then that is mighty small. I personally believe you need at least a 14 gauge wire, or even 12. You can't get "too big," but you can surely go too small.

I soldered into the purple wire in the round conector locted on the starbord side of the intake manifold. You know the one Mercury has ben using for years. Maybe the wire gauge is more like 14 or so. Anyway, we just returned and eerything went very well.
Nick
