I have removed the two bolts that go thru the flywheel housing to the starter flange and the two bolts that attach the bracket to the engine block at the other end of the starter. All wires have been removed as well. The starter is still tight in the fywheel housing. I have tapped the starter with a 2x2 and a hammer, but it did not move. Are there other bolts that I missed or is it just stuck in the housing? If the starter is just stuck, what should I spray on it and where is the best place to spray it. Also is there a place to put a jack screw or pry the starter flange without damaging the flywheel housing. Would appreciate any suggestions for freeing up the starter.

Sounds to me like a little prying is necessary, sounds like you've removed all that needs removing, of course i'm not there, but a medium sized screw driver used as a little...repeat a little leverage could be utilized between the starter mount and bell housing. The fear is cracking the bell housing, but if you cant get the starter off, what the hell good is the bell housing anyway...right ?

The starter on the 3.7L should be relatively easy to remove. There are four bolts total plus electrical connections to the solenoid. Two bolts go through the flywhell housing and two to the bracket. The following link shows all the parts. The trouble you're having is just some rust that has made it difficult to remove. To free the starter twist it slightly to free it, wiggle it by hand is often enough. An oil filter wrench or strap wrench will do the trick. It will twist about half an inch and should be easy to remove after. I bought a new one from this site last season, it was only $10 more than a rebuild, or you can order new brushes, etc. if you want to do your own repair. Good luck....

http://www.mercruiserpa rts.com/Show_Pictures3.asp?dnbr=%2012488&ivar=images/CRUISER/12488/3.png&inbr=908&bnbr=10&bdesc=STARTER+MOTOR+AND+WIRING+HARNESS
