Re: Mercruiser 3.0 140 hp head interchange - Needed
I have a 1987 Sunbird with a 3.0 mercruiser 140 hp engine. Mechanic says head is cracked. Will a 2.5 120 hp fit this? Does anyone know where I can buy a 140 hp head? I have found a few remans but don't want to put $500 + into this part. Checked ebay and the 140 are few and far between. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

I'm not sure if you're asking whether a 120 engine would fit your boat or whether a 120 head would fit your 140 block. Basically, you'll have to look at the ports to see if things will line up. The 120s had "siamesed ports" for the intake--two intake ports that join into one right before the head. It seems to me that this setup would have to mate up with something similar on the exhaust manifold. You could put a 120 head on a 140 motor, but chances are you'd get less than even the 120 it was originally rated at. The ports are a lot smaller and probably wouldn't mate up well, possibly causing more restriction than you would have on the original 120.
Check Ebay. There have been quite a few on there recently, including the one I just won, that I think I outbid you on. Ask for pictures of the intake-outlet side of things and see if they look the same as yours. Ask a lot of questions about why they're selling it, how the engine it came off of failed, etc. And try to be patient. There were five or six good 140 heads on Ebay over the past month. Right now there's a glut of 120s, but things will change.
There's a rebuilt one on Ebay that would work:

The price seems reasonable to me. It also looks like it would fit your manifold.
Good luck.
