Hello dear people,my name is Ivan, and i am from Croatia.I have a problem with my Mercruiser. Last summer the alarm of the oil level has start on,and alarm was runing for couple days but only when the motor was running on minimum RPM.When motor get some power and when the boat start driving fast, alarm is silent???It is a charter boat and now i am friteen that in the future i will have some problem with that boat. When i did an inspection of the oil level i have seen that i need to put one liter of the engine oil inside, and when i did it,alarm was shut down. Now my question is....is it something broken inside of the engine, becouse i did not put that one liter of the oil immediately,is it a big problem for the engine???I must say that i do not see any problems now, motor is running perfectly, but will i have problem in a future??? PLEASE HELP MI??:)

The oil alarm sensor doesn't detect oil level, but LOW OIL PRESSURE. Most of the oil sensors are calibrated to trigger with less than 4 lbs of pressure.

What I see here is that you were real low on pressure at idle...if the sensor was operating correctly. If this were mine, I would have someone rig a plumbed pressure gauge in place of the sensor and see what you have across the rpm range. If you are within specs, then you can try replacing the alarm oil pressure switch just for the peace of mind.

What was your helm oil pressure gauge saying when this was happening?

Happy boating!

No need to apologize...your english is just fine!

Point is...nobody here can tell you if you have done any engine damage by just reading your post.

My point was that you may have had decent oil pressure all along, but the alarm sensor is just wrong. If you put a reliable gauge on the engine...and you have decent idle pressure...then nothing has been hurt. The fact that the oil pressure switch only needs 4 lbs of pressure to be happy, tells you that the engine is not going to destruct with even just 5 lbs of pressure at idle. You are probably just fine....

One liter of oil missing would never give you any damage...that shouldn't be worrying you.

Happy boating!
