Mercruiser 3.0 Bogs or Stalls on full trottle

Hello,

This is my first post. I have a 1991 Chaparral with a 3.0 Mercuiser. If the engine is idling and I give it full trottle, the boat will stall. I can start it right back up just fine. If I SLOWLY accelerate I can get up to speed and the
engine runs fine. I can pull tubers this way but getting someone up on skis can be a little interesting. I have cleaned the carburetor and changed the fuel filter. I'm wondering if the carb needs to possibly be rebuilt or if could be something else.

Thanks in advance,

Scott

Here is a bulletin from Mercruiser that you may want to look at:

Unfortunately this part you suggested is no longer available. Some people just bend the arm which seems to work according to what I have read...

Bummer.

At least this is a free 'bump' to see if some of the forum wizards will jump in!

Happy boating!

More than likely your accelerator pump (internal carb part) is bad. Pull the flame arresstor (engine off) have someone pump the throttle. You should see 2 strong streams of gas shooting down the throat. If not time for a carb overhaul. If doing it yourself make sure you use the spring off the old pump assy on the new one.

Thanks cr2k. I'll check it out before doing anything else.

i recently had this same problem (last week). and rebuilt my carb. solved my acceleration bog, and overall runs better. i suggest you download a manual for ur carb. look up for the serial number or carb number directly off the carb, order the proper carb rebuild kit. pick up a carb cleaner. i used berrymans its a 1 gal paint can with a plastic basket in it. (got at autozone, i heard the Gunk brand isnt as good). i let all the metal parts except those specifically told not to be in the cleaner for a few hours. i took them out rinsed off with water(per instructions on carb cleaner can), then used a compressed b-12 chemtool to spray out the passages and surfaces, and a tooth brush to remove any stubborn crap. i had no previous mechanical experience, with the manual its a cinch. i also highly recommend taking things off and putting them in a tray, in the order u took them off. take apart the whole thing and take a picture of all the parts laid out. then u can throw the parts in the cleaner. i also took notes and pictures of the linkages as i took it apart so i would put them back together properly. You can download a manual under the adults only sticky.

good luck. and as mentioned before, make sure u check to see if you have 2 streams of fuel when the throttle is being pumped. if there are no streams, or it just dribbles, your accelerator pump is shot. and u need to open her up. might as well rebuild the whole thing and check the rest of the internal parts.
