mercruiser 3.0 engine wont start

The problem began last season with hard start ups.. stalls and backfiring... i associated them with bad gas... the starter also would not stop starting the engine for about ten seconds after the engine was already running... then when you would kill the engine it would fire a few last times and backfire... this boat has less than 100 hours... it was just poorly maintained... this season all i get when i turn the key is a click from the starter... so i put in a brand new one and that did nothing... i have cleaned all electrical connections... charged battery and am now at a loss... please help start my wakeboarding season

Does the crank turn by hand?

Did you clean and/or replace the connections to the ignition switch?
