I recently acquired a 2000 bayliner from a friend and something is wrong with the starter. Last season i would backfire... the starter would continue to try and start engine for about 10 seconds after it was running... this season it wont even turn over... the starter makes a click everytime you turn the key... and thats all it does... so i put in a new starter and i still have the same problem. i have cleaned all electrical connections with no success. please help

thanks

This sounds like two seperate issues (1) backfiring (2) starter problem...right? First do you have atleast 12-14 volts at the starter? What about same voltage going to the starter. Just because you cleaned the cable connections doesn't mean that they aren't corroded inside the cables. Will the motor turn over without spark plugs in it?

i cant even get the starter to turn over to get the engine to turn over... i have determined that the clicking is coming from the seleniod that is on engine not the one on the starter... (if thats even what it is)this boat is only 4 years old and not much corrosion was present to begin with... cables seem to be in good condition... i got plenty of juice flowing... to late to try and test if its getting to the starter but i bet its not getting anything due to clicking on relay, selenoid, thingy on engine 6 inches above starter. i touched cables together at relay and got pretty good shock

Does the crank turn over by hand?

How Many of These Threads Are There...........
Here's a Quick Tip,.....
Remove,.. Sand,.. Replace,+ Tighten EVERY Electrical connection In your Starting Circuit,.....
Including the Ground Cables..........

If that doesn't Fix your Problem,+ the Battery is at Full Charge,.............
Replace the Starter.................
If it's the slave soleoid that is clicking, it may be clicking, but not actually putting power top the yellow/red wire going to the small terminal on the starter.
You need to check with a test light or a meter to find out where you are loosing the power.

If you take a big screwdriver and use the bolts on the front of the waterpump you should be able to roll the crank. If your belt is loose you might have to push in on the belt while you turn the pump. If yours is like mine you cant get to the bolt on the center of the crank

Re: mercruiser 3.0 i/o engine start

thanks for the diagram... it was the yellow wire going to the starter... so i got her to turn over a few times but it sounds terrible and is shaking really bad.. i think the cylinders arnt firing correctly... im gonna do the plugs, wires and distributer tomarrow and hopefully it will do the trick... the gas tank is full and i was also thinking of draining it and refilling it with some good stuff... think its necessary? ill do the plugs first and pray... thanks for all the help
