:confused:After spending a lot of money to have my '87 Sea Ray Seville 17' bellows replaced, my reliable boat has become a nightmare. My new boat mechanic has turned out to be a mental case, and now I am on my own. Low on funds, and short on time, I have turned to MYSELF as my last resort to try and salvage what remains of a disappointing summer.

Problems prior to the transom service kit being installed

1. Boat leaked

(Mechanic told me my coil was bad so I also paid for new coil)

Problems after transom service kit being installed

1. Shift cable probably needs to be replaced
(engine dies when shifting, and is difficult to shift)

2. Coil resistance wire melted through harness

3. Tachometer very erratic

I downloaded service manual and feel quite qualified to adjust my shift cable. I'm very confident that I have done everything correctly, but still dies when trying to shift out of gear. I can live with this a little, most likely will pay a mercruiser certified mechanic to replace shift cable this winter.

Rather than replacing the resistance wire I decided to convert to electronic ignition. I installed the new module and a new 3.0 ohms coil. Instead of the resistance wire I got power from my electric choke.

Engine fired up great. I adjusted the time and the engine seemed fine. Ready to go to lake!

Get to lake, engine won't start! I check with just a test light & find no power at the electric choke! What?

As the day begins to fade I decide to run a 16ga wire straight from the ignition switch to the splice into the electric choke.

Engine fires right up and runs great!

Family in boat we scream around lake and everything seems fine but notice tach acting strange. Drop anchor & go swimming for bout hour. Start engine to head back to bathroom at marina (youngest needs to go #2)

Engine full speed then sputters, then dies. Won't start, get friendly tow to marina.

Give up and leave boat alone for the night.

Next day boat starts fine.

Tachometer doesn't work at all.

Put her on the trailer and brought her home.

What gives? Any help appreciated.

Sorry If I should have posted somewhere else.

Ayuh,... The shift cable shoulda been changed when the transom was serviced, as it's 1 of the throw-away parts that should always be replaced...
I really doubt adjustin' it is gonna help, it's Beat...

I'm guessin' the Tach is the ignition problem...
Disconnect it, 'n Try it...
