Hey all,
i have an older mercruiser 3.0 with a rochester 2gc carb and pre alpha outdrive (with alpha one gen 1 lower)
i bought it about a month ago and redid the lower unit water pump, changed the thermostat, changed the spark plugs, ignition switch, and rebuilt the carb.
idle has always been a little hesitant. seems to stay between the 500-800 range but sometimes stalls. to make sure it keeps going i usually put it into fast idle.
i ran the engine rich 2-3 times while waiting for the carb kit to arrive. at cruising speed, engine would sometimes seem to "miss'' when i would hit a wave. i could tell something was not just right, but engine was running fine, just seemed a little nitpicky.
i would usually cruise at 4000 rpm and have brought it close to 5000 a few times.
recently though, i can't go higher than 3000 RPM.
i did damage my prop a little bit with a rock and i know that can cause reduced rpms but the lower unit shaft still turns straight as an arrow and my prop is not destroyed by any means.
rebuilding the carb did not fix this situation although ONCE i was able to bring it up to 4000 rpm and then during the same ride, after bringing it down, it maxed out at 3000 again,
i'm wondering if the hesitating idle and low WOT rpm are related?
I know there can be several causes to this... i'd like to go by elimination starting with the easiest components to inspect.
what do you figure is causing my problem?
thanks!
chris
